ABSTRACT

This article investigated the revision process and the details of the revision of the ‘Basic Chinese characters for Chinese characters . Classical Chinese education' enacted in 2000.

Although the basic Chinese characters enacted in 1972 had a great influence on the Chinese characters. Classical Chinese education since its enactment, there was a strong need for an updated version to meet the needs of the times. Therefore, the Ministry of Education replaced 44 Chinese characters among the original 1,800 characters with new ones.

The direction and the task of the Chinese characters education in the 21st century requires careful consideration. That is, we need to consider the Chinese characters education in terrns of its relationship with the Korean language education, its dimension of lifelong or social education, culture education, and foreign language education. In addition, we need to discuss the problem of the Chinese characters education in light of the development of teaching and learning models, assessment tools, textbook revision.

In conclusion, we need to emphasize Chinese characters education for a fluent speech life and the promotion of our traditional culture.
