ABSTRACT

This is a field study to consider the common problems of the Moral Subject Matter Education (MSME) in all its aspects, to find out some weakness and firmness of the 7th Curriculums, and to grope for the betterment of the MSME. For these purposes, I made an survey form, which contained 28 questions, then I gathered the answers from the teachers who instruct the MSME in the middle and high school students in Jeju-do.

First of all, the teachers have interest and take pride in teaching the MSME. However, they consider the students relatively don't. Second, the teachers think that the character or the purpose of the MSME should be a course which may cultivate a "world citizen" based on the national identity. Third, the teachers don't make much time for the study of the moral subject teaching materials and instructional materials. And their teaching method and technique still depends on the expository teaching method.

They also make use of some inquiry teaching method nothing but the value debate of pros & cons, the interrogatory method of teaching. And the practical use of teaching aids is not very frequently. The teachers don't have much interest and recognition in the current tendency of the educational theory. To the question of "the most difficult teaching area", the large majority have the same opinion ; korean traditional ethics and oriental thought of ethics. And to the question of "the desirable model of teacher", they indicate "the firm and ardent conviction" on the rational of the MSME. Forth , to the question of "the assessment of the MSME", the teachers think that they try to evaluate students' affective & active morality beside the paper & pencil assessment. Finally, to the question of "the 7th Curriculums", the large part of the respondents say that the 7th Curriculums have some problems to complete. However, there are also more affirmative persons who are in charge of the MSME of the 7th Curriculums in schools.
