ABSTRACT

The anciant Korean literature in Chinese character, which has been based on the accumulated results of its study since the Korea ' s liberation from Japanese colonial rule, has undergone a lot of adverse criticism about a category of Korean literature, and now it has played an important role in a field of Korean literature and it has been adopted, used as major materials for the textbooks of the Korean language, of Korean literature and of Chinese characters . But as the unified criteria, which are applied to both Korean literature and Chinese classics in categorizing Korean literature and Chinese one, have not been made yet, actually every textbook of its kind has different aspects. I think this essential result is derived from a lack of a comprehensive understanding of the Korean literature including Korean language literature and Chinese classics and a lack of studying of its curriculum and textbooks.

Thus, this thesis has its aim in checking up the contents of the Chinese classics which we have to teach at high schools, and in utilizing this thesis as the basic materials for setting up the directions of its instruction by analyzing Korean literature written in old Chinese letters which has been editted, printed in the textbooks of the Korean language and the Chinese characters based on the sixth new curriculum.

In this thesis, what I have put emphsis on is to analyze the textbooks of the Korean language, literature, Chineseclassics compiled in the Korean textbooks. The analyses of the textbooks have become the essential theme in judging how Korean literature written in old Chinese letters has been reflected in the high school education ,and for this thesis, I have used such basic materials as two kinds of Korean language textbooks (book1, book2), thirty- six literature textbooks (book1, book2) in their eighteen kinds, thiry- two Chinese character textbooks in their eleven kinds totaling sixty textbooks in thirty different kinds. Their main contents are as follows :

Firstly, I have looked into how importantly Korean literature written in old Chinse characters has been treated after I have analyzed the Korean literature and foreign literature, Korean classical literature and Korean modern literature, the Korean literature and Chinese literature according to the frequency of and the number of allotted periods of mentioning of works of each field of the literature and after I have also considered the general trend of selecting of themes of the literature.

Secondly, I have inquired into the char - acteristics of the works such as how to write, the selected themes of the textbooks, the scope, the creativity, the translation and the records.

Thirdly, I have looked into and analyzed the situations of writing down the sectional works in Korean literature written in old Chinese letters and I have found the works and the trends which the editors and the writers of the textbooks have preferred in each field.

Fourthly, I have looked into the importance of relationship between major writers and the history of literature by studying, and by analyzing the situations of editions of their works.

Fifthly, I have divided the works into several parts according to ages, studied and analyzed the frequency of compilation of the works.

On the basis of the above analyzed results, I have suggested how to compile the textbooks and how to choose themes of Korean literature written in old Chinese characters and I have sought how to solve the problem derived from the process after I have analyzed the intention of the textbook compilers and looked for the cause of the problem.
