ABSTRACT
As part of a larger research project for developing a glocal model of yungbokhap education, this paper attempts to conceptualize yungbekhap education from a glocal perspective. For the purpose, we have first conducted a literature review to see how yungbokhap education is understood in academic discourse. Then, in order to tease out and scrutinize school teachers’ own notions of yungbokhap education, we have interviewed a group of teachers with an experience of integrating elements of yungbokhap education into their instructional practice.
We have identified two different ways of understanding yvngbddiap education standing out in our review of the literature. One is to conceptualize it as a means for enhancing national competitiveness in the contenporary socioeconomic context errphasizing the value added from knowledge convergence. The other is found in a body of literature on the epistemological norms pertaining to knowledge convergence, in which knowledge convergence is represented as a phenomenon of forming epistemic networks across multiple disciplines to expand the boundary of what is regarded as legitimate ways of thinking and knowing.
The findings from data gathered from our interviews with school teachers have echoed the view on yungbckhap education as an integrative and holistic approach to teaching and learning, whereby the current system of education can be constructively redesigned with new inclusive epistemological norms introduced to the system. Our analysis of the interview data has also revealed some limitations in the school teachers' conceptualization of yungbckhap education, which invites further research into its future development.
